September again and a new puppy!

Hawkeye is a purebred German Shepherd puppy.  He is long haired, from Czechoslovakian police dog lines, 16 weeks old (pictured at about 12 weeks).  He is terrorizing the rest of my pack, with bold bouncing attacks, barking and biting.  For the most part, they put him in his place.  Of course, I also intervene when necessary.  My terrier mix, Piper, roughhouses with him out of self defense!  Hawkeye is scary smart!  He learned "sit" in two minutes with clicker training, and has offered the behavior ever since.  "Down" is taking a little longer to get consistent, but he learned it immediately.  He walks beautifully on a loose leash after very few practice sessions; let's face it -- it's still just too hot to walk except maybe at 5 a.m., and even after all these years living in the desert and having to get up early for work, I still find it hard to get up at 5!  NOT one of my strong points!  7 a.m. fine, but it's still very humid with monsoon moisture, and already getting hot by then.

September 3, the humidity is still very high.  It is the time of year akin to the spring (believe it or not) in the northern climes, where one longs for the weather change to come -- for relief from the unrelenting heat and humidity that takes one's breath away.  It won't be long now before I and my pack will again be able to ramble through the desert and mountains.  Haudi's (the horse's) summer 'vacation' will be over, and we will once again hit the roads in the buggie and the trails under saddle.  Lots to look forward to this time of year!

Hawkeye, for one, is enthusiastic with the joy of puppiehood.  Yet, even he pushes to come into the house to nap in the air conditioning!

Celebrate God's provision of a beautiful world and beautiful critters!
